Shape up or ship out: 제대로 안 할 거면 나가.

새롭게 보기 시작한 영드 <Black Books>에서 주운 표현입니다. Shape up or ship out.

 

Shape up이라고 하면 to improve your behaviour or work (행동이나 일을 개선하다), ship out은 to order someone to go somewhere (다른 데로 보내 버리다)입니다. 이 두 표현이 함께 쓰이면 used to tell someone that if they do not improve they will be made to leave a place or their job (향상되지 않으면 그 장소를 떠나거나 직업을 그만두게 하겠다고 할 때 상용되는 표현)이랍니다. 그러니까, “똑바로 하던가 나가던가” 라고 해석할 수 있겟네요.

 

The kids need to shape up.

They will be shipped out to a correction centre.

(교정 센터로 보내질지도 몰라.)
