아직 공기 중에 뭔가 떠있다?

 

“It is still up in the air” 는 no decision has been made about it yet (아직 결정이 안 났다)라는 뜻이랍니다.

 

예문을 더 만들어 보면요...

 

“My research in Bangladesh is up in the air.”

(방글라데시 연구조사는 아직 정해진 건 없어.)

“Our plan to have a baby is left up in the air.”

(2세 계획은 아직이야.)  (요즘 조카마저 제게 하도 물어보기에....--;)

비슷한데 up 이 없이 be in the air라고 하면 또 완전 다른 뜻이랍니다.

1) in circulation

There's a rumor in the air that we're moving to a new location.

(우리가 새로운 곳으로 이사간다는 소문이 파다해.)

2) a lot of people feel it at the same time

There was a sense of excitement in the air.

(군중들 사이에 흥분이 가득했다.)

 

 

그런가하면, 제목이기도 한 On air는 익숙하시죠? 바로 방송 중이라는 뜻인데요...

 

미드 ‘Fraiser’에서 Dr. Fraiser Crane은 라디오 진행자로 활동하죠. Producer인 Rose에게 Fraiser가 뭐라고 잔소리하려는 찰나, Rose가 경고하죠...
