영드 <My Family>에서 나온 표현입니다. 논쟁을 벌이던 수잔과 수잔의 boss. 옆에서 보던 벤이 이렇게 이야기하지요. He is on the ropes.

 

be on the ropes라고 하면 informal한 표현으로 to be in a very bad situation, in which you are likely to be defeated (질 것 같은, 좋지 좋은 상황이다.)라는 뜻이랍니다.  줄에 대롱대롱 매달려 있는 상황을 연상해 보세요. 아찔하지요? ^^  그러니까 “그가 지기 직전이야. 그가 곤란한 상황이야.”라고 이야기한 거군요.

 

이렇게 예문처럼 쓰일 수 있겠네요.

 

He felt like being on the ropes.

(그는 궁지에 몰린 기분이었다.)

The President is on the ropes due to the scandal.

(대통령은 스캔들로 아주 곤란한 상황이다.)
