My stomach is in knots: 속이 불편해.

영서 소설 <If tomorrow comes>를 읽다가 주운 표현입니다. I could not touch a breakfast of tepid coffee and cold oatmeal. My stomach is in knots.

 

knot는 매듭이라는 뜻으로 기억하고 계실 텐데요...위장에 매듭이 막 꼬여있으면 불편하겠지요? knot가 이 문장에서는 a tight uncomfortable feeling caused by a strong emotion such as fear or anger (분노나 공포 같은 강렬한 감정으로 인한 불편한 감정)을 말한답니다. 그러니까 “난 아침으로 나온 식어빠진 커피랑 차가운 오트밀에는 손도 댈 수 없었다. 속이 불편했기 때문이다.”라고 한 것이군요.

(그를 떠올리는 것만으로 속이 영 불편해졌다.)
