Don't put yourself down: 스스로를 괜히 낮추지 마.

영드 <Miranda>에서 쏙 들어오던 표현입니다...상황은 기억이 안 나지만...요즘 제게 필요한 표현이라고나 할까요?

 

“Don’t put yourself down.”

 

put someone down이라고 하면 to criticize someone and make them feel silly or stupid [= belittle] (누군가를 비난해서 자신이 멍청하다고 느끼게끔 하는 것)을 말한답니다. 그러니까 여기서는 “자책하지 마.” 정도로 해석할 수 있겠지요...

If you put yourself down, don't complain when everyone else does the same.

(네가 스스로를 낮추면서, 다른 사람이 똑같이 그런다고  불평하지 마라.)

Expressing a modest "thank you" is much healthier than putting yourself down.

(그냥 고맙다고 하는 게 자신을 괜히 비하하는 것보다 훨씬 낫다.)
