straighten out : 똑바로 해.

 

소설 <The way men act> 중 나온 표현입니다.

 

주인공이 해고를 당하는 장면에서... 사장 부부가 이렇게 이야기하지요...

 

“We even talked about letting you buy into a business one day if you straightened out.”

 

여기서 straighten out은 to sort out (해결하다), to improve someone's behaviour (똑바로 하다)라는 뜻이랍니다. 그러니까 “네가 제대로만 하면 심지어 언젠가 가게도 열어 주자고 얘기했었다구.”  정도로 해석할 수 있겠네요.

It’s time to straighten out difficulties. (어려운 문제들을 해결해야 할 때야.)

The flawed history should be straightened out. (그 역사적 오류를 바로 잡아야지.)
