On the whim: 그냥 그러고 싶어서.

영화 <The other Boleyn girl>에서 주운 표현입니다. 에궁...무슨 장면 중에 나왔는지는 기억이 안 나네요..내용에 열중하느라...^^

 

여튼, “On the whim”이라는 처음 듣는 표현이 있더라구요...

 

원래 whim이라고 하면 a sudden feeling that you would like to do or have something, especially when there is no important or good reason (뭔가 갑자기 내키는 기분, 특히 별로 중요한 일도 아니고 이유가 있어서도 아닐 때) 라는 뜻이랍니다. 

 

I have a whim for taking a walk.

(갑자기 산책하고 싶네)

 

그래서 on the(a) whim이라고 하면 for no good reason (그냥 아무 이유 없이), on impulse (충동적으로, 즉흥적으로) 라는 뜻이 된답니다.

 

I did not go there just on a whim.

(거기 그냥 아무 이유도 없이 간 거 아니야.)

You must not buy the car on a whim.

(너 그냥 즉흥적으로 그 차 사면 안 돼.)
