On the off chance: 혹시나 하고

 

영드 My Family에서 주운 표현입니다. 아...시즌 4에 접어드니, 주인공들이 나이 먹어 가는 게 보이는군요....^^ 여튼 나온 표현이란, on the off chance인데요..

 

if you do something on the off-chance that something will happen, you do it hoping that it will happen although it is unlikely (실현 가능성은 별로 없을지라도 일어나기를 하라면서 뭔가를 하다)라는 뜻이랍니다. 즉, 아래 예문과 같이 사용하실 수 있는데요...

 

I just dropped by to see you on the off chance.

(그냥 혹시나 널 볼 수 있을까 해서 들러 봤어.)

She wanders on the off chance of bumping into him.

(그녀는 행여나 그를 만날 수 있을까 싶어서 거리를 배회한다.)
