alley라고 하면 a narrow street between or behind buildings (좁은 골목길)을 말하잖아요. right up to one’s alley는 말 그대로 하면 네 길에 딱 맞게 올라오는 것 같다, 이니까 very suitable for someone (누군가에게 적절하다)라는 말이 된답니다. 반대말은 up의 반대인 down을 쓰겠지요...

 

예문 만들어 볼게요. (up/down 둘 다를 넣느라고 어색합니다만-- 

 

The job sounds rihgt up to his alley.

(그 일은 그한테 딱 적절한 것 같아.)

Yes, but he would be paid only $20 per hour.

(맞아. 그런데 문제는 시간당 급여가 20달러 밖에 안 된다는 거야.)

That sound right down to his alley.

(그건 좀 그 수준에 못 미치는 것 같네.)
