Brush off: 무시하다, 불식시키다

영화 Mona Lisa Smile에서 스쳐 지나간 phrasal verb 입니다. ‘솔질하다’라는 뜻의 brush와 ‘불어 있던 것에서 떨어지다’ 라는 뉘앙스의 off 가 만나서 to refuse to listen to someone or their ideas, especially by ignoring them or saying something rude (다른 사람 말을 들으려 들지 않는다. 특히 말을 무시하거나 무례한 말을 내뱉음으로서) 라는 뜻으로 쓰인답니다. 솔질해서 털어 없애 버리는 것, 즉, 무시하다, 거절하다는 뜻이 되는 것이지요.
