It is a long shot: 승산은 별로 없어.

 

영화 <Sideways>에서 나온 표현입니다. 책이 출판될 거라고 떠벌리고 다니는 친구에게 이제 편집자들이 검토하고 있을 뿐이라면서 이렇게 말하지요. It’s a long shot.

 

long shot은  used to say that a plan is worth trying, even though you think it is unlikely to succeed (비록 성공할 것 같지는 않아도 시도해 볼 만한 가치가 있는 계획을 이야기할 때 쓰는 표현)이랍니다. 그러니까 “가망은 별로 없지만 말이야.”라고 한 것이군요.

 

참, 사람한테도 쓸 수 있는데요...if someone is a long shot, they are not likely to be chosen for a job or to win an election, competition etc: 어떤 사람이  long shot이라고 하면 어떤 일에 뽑히거나 선거나 경기를 이길 가능성이 희박하다는 뜻이랍니다.
