Be on the level: 솔직하다

 

소설 <If tomorrow comes>에서 주운 표현입니다. 억울하게 보스의 돈을 꿀꺽한 것으로 오인 받게 된 Joe가 이렇게 말합니다. “I’ve always been on the level with you.”

 

be on the level 이라고 하면 to be honest and legal (정직하고 합법적이다)라는 뜻이랍니다. 그러니까 “난 너한테 항상 솔직했잖아.”라고 항변하는 것이지요.

 

어떻게 사용할 수 있을까요?

Is he on the level ?

(그를 믿어도 될까?)

I think so. He really wants to be on the level with you.

(그럴 거야. 그는 너한테는 정말 솔직하거든.)
